My attraction to strategic planning is the necessity to think.  Like really think to the point where my brain hurts and I need to take a walk.  But then the thinking contributes to impactful and remarkable ideas.  Attempting to understand people is crucial in planning, but any old "people watcher" is doing just that.  It's the trial to comprehend people intermingled with culture at the intersection of commerce that is so captivating to me.  I'm not in it for the awards.  I'm in it to bring a discerning naiveté to the table and the chance to ponder amongst passionate creators.
